The Things That Kept Me Warm/Safe

‘The Things That Kept Me Warm’ is a body of work rooted in the inherent nature of the humans desire to overcome. Referencing tokens or moments of warmth and safety, Artist Stephanie Forbes explores a childhood marked by challenges and the triumph of overcoming abuse. By channeling the resilience embedded in the human spirit, Forbes employs the oyster as a powerful metaphor throughout her work.

Growing up in the embrace of the Lowcountry, surrounded by the rich tapestry of its landscapes and stories, Artist, Stephanie Forbes, found solace in the symbolism of the oyster. Much like Forbes’ own journey, these resilient creatures endure trials to produce pearls, each one a testament to the strength within. The oyster serves as a nod to her Southern roots and upbringing, grounding her artistic expression in the warmth and safety of the communities that shaped the artist.

In this body of work, Forbes aims to expand the viewer’s perspective on the transformative power of a triumphant past. Just as one oyster can impact its entire community and surroundings, our individual journeys of resilience contribute to the greater pleasure of a whole community. Through the intricate layers of sculptures, installations, and paintings, Forbes evokes a profound sense of interconnectedness, celebrating the strength that arises from personal triumphs and the collective resilience of a community.

Making the desire for healing a tangilble experience, Forbes challenges the viewer to examine their own interconnectedness within their community. Their placement within another persons journey. As well as other’s footprint on their own lives. To acknowledge how we are all working together for the betterment of humanity despite the evils that try to destroy us. As one oyster turns a nacre into a pearl, there is one less threat to its community. So as, when one person heals, we all heal.

“The Things That Kept Me Warm/Safe” is more than an artistic endeavor; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of overcoming adversity, a celebration of triumph, and an exploration of the interconnectedness that binds us all.
